i got a nintendo ds a few weeks ago and i am obsessed! namely with brain age. guess who can do 20 arithmetic problems in 19 seconds??? ME! AND i got a brain age of 21, which is only one away from the best possible score. i never suspected i was a genius, but nintendo has since enlightened me.

does anyone watch Dexter on showtime? OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS SHOW. after having multiple people tell me it was up my alley, colin and i finally rented disc one of the first season last night and watched 3 hours straight, stopping only to sleep. i want to read the novel now, although the cinematography is one of the things i love the best about the show.

for the past few weeks ive woken up sore every morning. my neck and shoulders are so tense, but our nice pillow top mattress is only 2 years old and i dont want to accept that it has already gone bad. anyone else ever have this problem? any easy resolutions to it? im thinking maybe its my pillow?

i realized that i did not make a single post in the month of december, so i am here to remedy that.

obviously there was the new york trip which was amazing and i miss the place regularly.

then there was returning home to discover we had lost power and our house was a cozy 55 degrees. i got to apply my makeup with a flashlight and go to work with the puffy air dried mess that my hair becomes without styling tools. it was 5 full nights until our power returned, but luckily my parents offered up their digs in the meantime. of course, they lost power the night after we arrived, but it wasnt quite as brutal since they had a fireplace in the living room.

it was the first christmas my brother wasnt with the family. him and his wife decided to spend it with her parents in georgia, so we got to babysit their gremlin. this gremlin:

shes in love with finnegan, but even he knows that thing is too ugly for him.

i mean, really. this guy could have any lady he wanted..

my grandma turned 93 and we spent christmas eve at her house. my grandpa died the week before christmas in '99, so its always kind of sad to go back over there and see that empty seat. my grandma is one of the most amazing people though, i always love being around her.

we've gotten little bits of snow, but nothing too exciting. our snow didnt stay white for too long anyway..

so that was my december. and now its 2008 and i just cant get used to writing that down. i will have been married for a year and a half next month, which doesnt sound like long at all, and it is still the best thing that ever happened to me.

finnegan has been the focus of my boredom lately, involuntarily becoming the subject for little photoshoots. he really does take great pictures.

colin grabbed the camera one afternoon and put me on the other side of it.

he and finnegan make a nightly routine of wrestling before bed. finnegan pretty much chomps into anything that moves beneath the covers and all you can really do is protect the jewels.

finnegan turned 3 years old last month and in celebration got a giant new bone. it took him hours to figure out it was for chewing. he kept circling the house with it in his mouth and a confused look in his eyes, like he wasnt sure if he should be grateful for this "gift." finally we talked him into taking a nibble, then couldnt get him to put it down.

he is the cutest dog ever. im pathetic when im around him, baby talking and making up songs.
it really is sad. but what would you do??

the weather has been absolutely gorgeous the last two days. sunny and in the 70s with little to no wind. yesterday we sat on the porch with finnegan, me reading while colin practiced guitar for his show on the 20th. he also happened to be wearing this plaid little pearl snap shirt (i swear we're not cowboys..or hippies)and looked too cute to not be in pictures. i probably enjoyed these more than you will.

so sexy! ill save all the little comments i really want to make, as to not upset your stomach.

we took advantage of the nice weather today and took finn to sutton wilderness, went home to refuel, then went out to the soccer fields to kick the ball around. we've also been working out atleast 4 days a week, so who knows, maybe i will actually grow some calves! im working on my arms right now, with evangeline lilly as my inspiration. im not looking to get quite as boney, but i love the definition she has. and she is just beautiful. that always helps.

i believe its cheeto time.

for the first time in all my years as an insurance agent, i saw a violation on an mvr for someone driving too slow. yes, they got a ticket for going too slow.

now that is the america i want to see! i cant stand those weiners who force me to drive below the speed limit on the interstate and waste minutes of my life. seriously.

p.s. colin got the first 3 seasons of lost on our ipod last week, and we tore through 10 episodes in one sitting. we are now on season two, and i freaking love this show. if anyone tells me what happens in an episode i havent seen yet....we can no longer be friends.

i didnt mean to leave you hanging in suspense, seeing as i returned from ny over 3 weeks ago and have yet to post a single picture. i really dont even know where to begin..how about the car ride to the airport? my dad picked us up and as i sat in the backseat my leg was doing the twitch thing where im so anxious i get tremors all over. im trying to place my mind elsewhere but the random jolts of my body make it difficult. finally we arrive and as he pulls up to the curb to let us out water starts squeezing out of my eyes (okay, you can call it crying if you want) and i kind of started the hyperventilating thing where you inhale and exhale so rapidly that your lip bounces in the storm. before that point i could try and think about things other than flying, but at that moment i was phyically facing my fear, staring at it in cold metal flesh, so big and real that there was no use for denial. my dad tried to say a few comforting things and reminded me that i can always pray and i slid out of the car, semi-embaressed.

passing through security was not as intense as i had imagined it to be, and before i knew it i was rubbing elbows with my husband on the smallest plane ever. we're talking a grand total of 3 seats across. and thats it. just 3. much to my surprise i was calmer at this point, i guess realizing that there was no turning back so i might as well make the best of it.

finally the engine roars and the plane takes off, climbing for ages until it levels out and it feels like we're floating. not even an hour later we're in houston getting ready for the next flight, and guess what? im excited. yes, i actually enjoyed flying. at best i was hoping to overcome my morbid fear, but to actually enjoy it is more than i could ask for. my one mistake was having a massive, cheese drenched sandwich before the flight to jfk. i got some wicked nausea, but after a couple cans of seltzer water i made a full recovery.

we land in new york and im swelling with this sense of pride because i have just successfully faced my number one fear and taken it down with a vengeance. not to mention i didnt even have to medicate myself! the xanax layed untouched in my bag the entire time. this has opened up a wonderful world of opportunity for me, seeing as i can now travel to places a car wouldnt take me. colin was so great and supportive the entire time. i know i wouldnt have done nearly as well if it werent for him being so amazing.

so here are a lot of pictures. explanations are to follow.

we pretty much crammed in every tourist activity imaginable. grand central, times square, rockefeller center, statue of liberty , empire state building, chinatown, museum of natural history and many many more! it was so amazing and i want to go back and spend much more time.

there were 4 h&m stores within walking distance of each other, and since we are yet to get any here, i stocked up while i could and got some sweet clothes. everyone at my office is jealous because they cant even order them online. muwahahaha.

i think the museum of natural history was one of my favorites, but you seriously need to spend an entire afternoon there to see it all. with only 3 nights, we did the speed tour, but it was still incredible.

i could tell an entire story behind each picture i posted but dont have the time or energy for that tonight. im doing good finally getting these things uploaded. maybe i can have all my christmas pictures up by february!

***NEED HELP. QUESTION REGARDING AIRPLANE CARRY-ONS***

okay, we are leaving a week from today for new york and i was wanting to carry on my bag since we will only be there for 3 nights. i printed off the carry on regulations from continental and it said that if you have liquids, gels or aerosols, they must be 3.4oz or less, and toiletries must fit comfortably into a ziploc baggy (i cant remember the dimensions). i have no idea how anal they are about this stuff, so i am wondering if a large bar of soap would need to go in this ziploc baggy, or if its okay since its a solid. also, is it okay to keep all my makeup in a regular makeup bag, as long as none of it is liquid? these questions might be retarted, but thats okay because i am flight ignorant and just want to eliminate any unnecessary stress. thank you for your help!

it seems ive somehow managed to fit a years worth of activities into the month of october, but lets not get head of ourselves.We'll go chronologically and begin with my anniversary vacation back to wyoming. as usual we stayed at his parents house in monument, colorado before completing the 18 hour drive onto jackson, wy. while in colorado we visited garden of the gods and had a chuckwagon dinner at the flying w ranch. www.flyingw.com. after cowboys served us beef and beans on tin plates, they entertained with an hour of music and comedy. ive never been to anything like this place and i loved it.

then it was on to jackson and yellowstone national park. this was an awesome year for wildlife and i finally got to have my close encounter with not 1, but 3 moose! now i can die happy. as expected, there are a crap ton of pictures.

MOOOSE!!! it was actually a lot closer than it looks.

we came down a hillside trail to find a family of elk standing on our path, including a little baby that looked more like a hyena. colin takes the "gorging" warnings pretty seriously, so he wouldnt let me proceed until they moved, which took ages. colin is adorable when hes being protective.

colin made me get on the other side of the lens for a few shots. i learned i have freckles on my nose.

it started snowing one day as we were leaving yellowstone. they were the biggest flakes i have ever seen, almost golfball size. not much snow was left on the ground when we returned the next day, but the little that stuck around looked very pretty.

we were trying to drive at one point and these massive buffalo were just standing in the road, not responding to colins repeated jabs at the horn. if i didnt own a civic, i would have told him to plow on through. i really think buffalo are dumber than cows.

all in all our trip was rad, we tried lots of new beer from the local brewery, and saw a plethora of wildlife. oh, and made it back alive. that was a major high point. and 10 days in the wilderness with my husband made me love him even more.

i got a new camera just before departure, and i still dont know jack about the manual settings, but im having fun with what little features ive uncovered so far.

colin and i went to the ou/missouri game on the 13th. this is typically very uncharacteristic of us, but we were offered free tickets and colins interest in football has been slightly piqued since he started playing flag with my brother. we got to our seats 30 min before kickoff and they were pretty kickass. on the 5 yd line, just 16 rows back. and they were aisle seats, so i didnt have to climb over salivating fans to escape to the bathroom. at first i was unsure if 4 striaght hours of nothing but football could hold my attention, but soon enough i was screaming obscenities at the opposition and yelling out instructions to my players like a zealous old man. the guys in the aisle across from us threw up bro high fives every time a play was completed. i have to admit, i was amped and had my nails pressed halfway into colins arm when Missouri took the lead. but ou pulled out in the end and became victors for their sold out hometown crowd. after all the excitement was over i remembered why i typically avoid this-game traffic. it took us an hour to drive 5 blocks. not to mention people were driving like maniacs. but after a full 2 hours and a pit stop to taco bell we made it home alive.

we've had a couple pumpkin carving parties and the results are rotting on my porch right now. i wish those things didnt go bad so quickly.

i cant believe thursday is november first and my flowers are still growing out of control! they look better than they did all summer.

so does the fine ass on that man.but i digress..

i found a couple costumes for finnegan and we've enjoyed ridiculing him as he wanders around the house.

my friend georgia was in town last weekend and we roamed campus with our friend eric after drinks at the library.

saturday morning colin and i ran a 5k race to benefit the junior league of norman. i wont tell you how long it took me, as to not diminish the glory of just finishing the thing at all. i was really proud of myself because i loathe mornings and jogging. this involved both. just one thing to check off of my "things accomlished in this lifetime" list.

i made the mistake of going horseback riding for two hours after the race. walking was something of a challenge that night and into the next day. but with each painful step was the memory of the fun things i had done. i tried to get pictures of the horses, but georgia dropped my camera while riding and it is pretty much dead. but dont worry, ive got another one. (yes, i saw you furrow your brow with anxiety at the thought of no more pictures!)

the big news of the month is that i bought plane tickets to new york, which means, you guessed it, i will be FLYING to new york. just typing that word gives me palpitations. if you know anything about me, you are aware of my paralyzing phobia regarding airplanes. but i figured it was about time to look this damn thing in the face and eat the resulting fear for breakfast.thats right, i am facing my fear then promptly kicking it in the crotch. (but you can definitely still say a prayer for me in the meantime!!)

my very vest friend in the whole world is moving to another state in three days and it has forced me to realize just how much i like her. i will casually refer to her as my plutonic soulmate, referencing all the times shes known just what to say to pull my mind out of the dark traps it occasionally slips into. she is currently only one of two people on this earth with whom i can share a comfortable silence, and the only girl i trust to tell me the truth gently about that questionable haircut i got. she is an amazing mother, devoted wife, and the most authentic person i know. i feel like i cant fully explain the depth of this friendship because to me, it is the only one of its kind.in the years that we have been friends there was never an argument, never a misunderstanding because the truth was always laid out first. you know god broke the mold on this one because it was just too good to be true. he is probably kicking himself, knowing that the virtue of every woman will be greatly overshadowed by the trail this one left behind. it has been a sad few weeks, but im glad that someone else, states away, will have the pleasure of discovering this jewel of a woman, because she is too good to keep stationary. her and her family have done so much for the people here, and i know they will continue their work wherever they are called.

i was trying to not be overly dramatic on this one, but im afraid i cant quite peel that layer off. my leaky eyes are a blessing and a curse.

but, on the upside, next saturday is my 25th birthday and 25 just sounds exciting, so im really looking forward to that. the weekend after that is my one year anniversary, which is unbelievable, and 4 days after that we leave for colorado and wyoming. and all the while, my best friend will be just a phone call away.

colin had band practice tonight so i figured it would be a nice time to cut away and get some facetime with the the internet at my parents.

whats new with me, you may be asking? well, let me just tell you...

colin and i got a pet rat named niko who lives in a cage in our living room. she is adorable and smart and already knows what "no" means when i shout it out anytime she tries to crawl on my head.

finnegan is fascinated by her and will spend his afternoons laying in front of her cage just watching. but he has been scared to get too close after the "nose tasting" incident. smart boy.

my zinnias are truly growing out of control now and its hard to believe these massive bushes came from a single little plant.

im really going to miss gardening once winter hits. whats a girl to do with her spare time?

finnegan is still being the cutest puppy in the world, although, as evidenced by the pictures below, he still has moments where he looks more pet cemetary than child friendly.

he developed a little sore on his foot that he wouldnt stop licking, so we got to tape a sock on him for a few weeks after we applied the medicine. it took him a few days to figure out how to walk on wood floors with a slippery socked foot. of course colin and i were delighted to watch and laugh. finnegan was not quite so happy.

allysa and her twin sister alona came over to celebrate the first birthday of a stuffed koala i bought her last year. what can i say, they are 12 year old girls. they carry this thing around everywhere and have even developed a special voice for when the koala wants to "talk." its pretty amusing.

she called me at work today to talk about her first day of junior high. it was really cute and it reminded me that she really does see me as an older sister of sorts with whom she can share all her secrets. so i guess ive done my job.

colin and i got back sunday night from our mini vacation to the gulf, and i have to say that i am the queen of blinking/talking/making stupid faces in general when colin snaps a picture. i asked him "why do you always take the picture when im talking?" he smiled big and replied "because, you are always talking." then we shared a hearty laugh and popped a mentos.

i made him build a sandcastle with me and the end product turned out to be a funny shaped "D." totally unintentional.

this is where we spent our last night, drinking beer and watching the sun set.

and look at this little cutie!!! i had so much fun with him. almost a year later and im still extremely glad hes my husband. i hear thats a good sign.

im not sure if anyone still reads this, but obviously colin made it back from china alive, and with some nice little treats for me including chinese beef jerky! i would eat beef jerky off uranus if production was in place. seriously, i love the stuff.

work has been unbelievably busy in the past few weeks. apparently summer is the time to buy insurance, and everyone seems to have our agencys number. but this also means more money for ashley, which means colin and i get to take a short little galveston vacation before our real 10 day colorado/wyoming adventure in september.which is good because i am in dire need of a vacation since i never miss work and the days i dont eat lunch at my desk are few and far between.

ive stayed busy lately weeding my flower beds and spending every waking moment with my husband. im planning on traveling with him next year, assuming by then i have overcome my paralyzing fear of airplanes. its really pretty sad, but the thought of a 13 hour flight has been keeping me up at night. sometimes i wonder how different my disposition might be had i not lived in the same town for the past 21 years. its hard not to grow attached to the comfort you come to depend on when your surroundings never change. i feel like kids who were plucked from their schools and moved around atleast once, forced to readjust and make new friends, kind of have an advantage that i dont. everything was always so comfortable and i feel like i lack skills i could have developed by being introduced to new surroundings. i want to be the kind of person who is keen to the idea of picking up and moving cross country to start over with a blank slate. i want to be able to move one day but as embarrassing as it is to admit, the idea is kind of scary right now. colin, on the other hand, moved multiple times as a kid and doesnt seem to struggle with any of this. its hard not to be jealous sometimes of his seemingly fearless nature, but i know jealousy wont change me for the better, especially when i can just choose to face down those fears. which is why im going to make myself fly overseas.

damn. i always get on here with the intention of writing some superficial, fun, light weight entry about shopping or something, the kind people tend to enjoy, but it always turns into something else.

i DID finally give in and begin reading harry potter. i sat down tonight with the sorcerers stone and read through page 57. im pretty excited.

its so strange thinking that its noon where colin is right now, and im about to go to bed.

finny and i went on a walk this evening, and just as we reached the 10 minute mark of our trek, a torrential downpour began. finnegan hates the rain and i was wearing a white t-shirt but was too far from home to do much about it. my lips felt all slobbery and it kind of reminded me of that scene in the goonies where they find the wishing well and cory feldman is yelling about his wish that didnt come true and water is just streaming down his face into his mouth as he spits while hes talking.

after finally making it back into my house, finnegan was thorougly depressed and i could have won a wet tshirt contest. definitely one of those moments you wish your husband wasnt halfway across the world because it was too funny to miss.

i guess ill just have to re-enact the wet tshirt when he returns on the 19th.

my zinnias are looking bright and happy, which im very excited about because just a few weeks ago they were inches from death. its my first attempt at a flower bed, so i imagine if everything were to die, the disappointment would be a little hard to overcome. about a week ago i dug each of them up, took a hoe to the soil and incorporated some organic hummus and manure. it seems to have done the trick because we are currently out of harms way.

in two days colin will step onto a plane bound for the himalayas for a 2 week adventure. the emotions kind of come in waves-fear, anxiety, excitement. sometimes they come in tidal waves and knock me on my ass. but ive been very careful to watch my thoughts, taking each one captive to examine it for rightness and truthfulness. my imagination gets away from me if i dont keep a close eye on it (ive currently got it under 24 hour surveillance). phil. 4:6 is my new best friend."be anxious for nothing, but..let your requests be made known to god." it is scary, but im still super excited about this opportunity to grow..and about jumping his bones the minute those precious feet hit oklahoma soil.

i booked our vacation last week! we are going to stay a total of 10 nights: 4 in colorado and 6 in wyoming at the same inn we stayed at for our honeymoon. we're not leaving until the last week in september, but i can already taste that mountain air. let me refresh your memory with some pics i took last year.

colin and i actually went and browsed the cameras at best buy the other day specifically for this purpose. i love photography, but the cheapo gateway camera i own keeps me from enjoying my results. he tells me i deserve a new one, and i believe the man is right on this one. however, after recent calculations, it was determined that we're going to owe around $3000 in taxes next year because no deductions are taken from the study money he receives. boo. so although blowing our savings on a camera is enticing, i dont want to be making high interest installments to the government. but i really cant take going back to somewhere so beautiful without a nice camera. we'll see what happens.

what i thought was a dead nasty vine has blossomed into a beautiful honeysuckle bush growing from the cracks in our shed. there was a crap ton of bees and flies hovering over it, but the blooms are nice!

i got up early to mow the lawn today and while i circle the yard, finnegan was just two steps behind me following all the way. it was really cute. then again, cute is all he knows.

sometimes when im home by myself i sit on the couch and just look at my ring, then i think about my husband and how i can confidently say that no man who will ever inhabit the earth could treat me as good as he does. we've been married for over 8 months now and i truly grow to appreciate that man more everyday.

im seriously going to do a full wedding post someday. the saddest thing is, i havent even ordered any wedding pics. the only ones i have in hand are 35mm shots that were given to me by friends or family. this is by far one of my favorite shots. ive put it up before but i just cant get enough!

this week is going to be different.

i took allysa to a big brothers big sisters banquet last night at the church where my brother got married. it was mexican themed in honor of cinco de mayo and a tasty local mexican restaurant catered the whole thing. my favorite part of the night was looking around at all the matches and seeing the sheer joy on these kids faces that someone believed they were worth their time. my heart kind of swells when i think about the impact these volunteers will have on the lives of all the kids, but it also makes me wonder if im doing enough. like do i speak the right things into her life or take her to participate in the best activities? i never want to look back and believe i could have done better in this relationship.

speaking of participating in the "best" activities, we did a photo shoot on the train tracks last week! (only after approval from her mom of course)She saw a picture i took of jayme (one of my biological little sisters) and begged me to do the same for her. if the pictures have not been sufficient indicators so far, allysa is a major ham and loves being in the limelight. which is exactly why her and i are a perfect match. my personality is a bit on the dramatic side as well-but its strictly grassroots, organic drama-none of that contrived bs people feel the need to incorporate into their lives to alleviate boredom. but i digress...

i told her she didnt look dead becaus she was supporting her weight with her hand, but she just insisted she look at the picture and replied "whatever, i look hot!" shes like that. i laugh at her, then try to reinforce the idea that looks mean nothing and beauty will fade. then she says something like "wouldnt it be awesome if the world was shaped like my head?"

that kid keeps me on my toes.

i got health insurance!! surely you remember my fiasco about being declined 3 separate times in a matter of weeks. well, my work has finalized the paperwork on a group plan that includes dental, vision, and life, and it was effective may 1. this is a HUGE answer to prayer. colin is on the plan as well, and my office is picking up 85% of my tab. sweeeeeet. no more paying for dentist visits!

im pretty sure im going to cry myself to sleep each night colin is gone next month. next month. do you know how soon that is? i keep wavering between pretending im strong in an effort to convince myself, or just crying like a little girl and letting it all hang out. right now im leaning toward the little girl bit.

we had pho for dinner before he went off for the weekend to the digestive research study.hes gone 3 days and 2 nights which im trying to use as practice for the 2 week himalaya trip, pretending it doesnt bother me so much that finnegan is the only man in the bed. did i mention i freaking love my husband?

i get to run a beer and nut booth for our agency at the norman realtors golf tournament monday afternoon. so basically i get paid to hand out alcohol and peanuts to drunk salesman while working on my tan. except im just kidding about that tan part because i dont have one-minus the nice farmer lines i got while doing habitat for humanity last saturday. it should be pretty exciting.

im rereading mere christianity and falling again for the writing of c.s. lewis. not that i ever fell out of love with it, i just needed a little something to stoke that fire. colin and i are going to go through it together and talk about any questions, disagreements or points we feel worth mentioning. im excited about combining two things i love-my husband and c.s. lewis.

okay now im just procrastinating so i dont have to go home to an empty bed.

last night i had a dream that we werent really out of cheese, so i woke up excited and headed to the fridge..only to discover that it was only a dream and we really are out of cheese. i was pretty bummed.

1. only 24 hours until i get to leave with my husband for dallas to see the body worlds exhibit!!!!!

2. i have never liked beer until i recently discovered asahi select. i am now a fan.

3. im still addicted to folgers gourmet supreme dark coffee. it truly is the best part of waking up.

4. colin and i will have been married for 6 months on friday!

5. life is just pretty excellent in general.
